Why are priests called men of the cloth?

Apparently up to the 17th C it was applied to anyone who wore a uniform or livery that distinguished their work. Then it became only the clergy that it was applied to. http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mmanofcloth.html Does it also apply to priests of other faiths than Christian?
