In the States the day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday when mobs pack the cheesy malls and start purchasing their Christmas gifts. Black Friday is the biggest single retail profit day of the year. Is there anything similar in the UK?

In this neck of the woods, Boxing Day sales are the biggest retail day of the year. All department stores offer everything below half price. If you can get your nails sharpened ready for the big event, armed with knee pads and mace, well, you can get all your presents for the following year at below cost.

Not necessarily Boxing Day, although that's quite busy, the days between Christmas and new Year see the shops in a total frenzy with people returning their Christmas gifts and buying them back at a vastly reduced rate. The spending spree lasts for days and is best avoided.

The serious answer is no, there is no one day here with a mass spending spree that triggers the run-up to Christmas in the way that the day after Thanksgiving does there in the US.
