David Greene didn't want his name to sound too European, or more accurately, he wanted his name to sound more Hebrew and Israel-related. He changed his last name to Ben Gurion - literally "son of a lion cub" (the "lion cub" being the biblical Judah).

A lot of Israelis change their names to more Hebrew ones. Some transliterate their names into something more poetic (as Ben Gurion did), and some literally translate their names (Rosenstein becomes Even-Shoshan, which is the name of the Hebrew equivalent of Webster's dictionary). Some take on completely new names after the place they settle in or Zionistic ideals (Ben Canaan, Ben Yehuda, etc.)
