"woman" comes from "wife-man" where "wife" meant "female" and "man" meant a human being. The corresponding male term was "wer-man", "wer" meaning "male" and "man" meaning a human being.

"Zot hapa'am 'etzem me'atzamai uvasar mib'sari, l'zot yikare ishah, ki me'ish lukocho-zot."
"This one now is from one of my bones, and from my flesh, this one shall be called woman, for from a man she was taken."
-Genesis 2:23
In Hebrew, however, there is sometimes a bit of confusion between the word "ishah" with a silent H at the end, which means "woman", and "ishah'" with the pronounced H, which means "her husband" or "her man".
