They're always doing that sort of thing - nearly as bad as us Brits. There's about 5,000 French troops in Ivory Coast at the moment propping up the government and rescuing expats. They sent troops into the Democratic Republic of Congo last year on a similar mission, but I don't think it was as many as 5,000. Nov 25 04, 10:51 AM

The French have somewhat more responsibility for the Cote d'Ivoire as it was one of their colonies than the Americans do for Iraq. Come to that, we have more responsibility for Iraq than they do - it was one of our mandated territories after WW I when the Ottoman Empire broke up, and Kuwait was one of the Trucial States that we looked after the foreign affairs of. A further back responsibility than Frances for Cote d'Ivoire, though. Nov 25 04, 4:37 PM
