    Buttercup syrup contains chloroform. Why?

    		Anaesthetising the sore throat, I would think. One thing it doesn't contain is buttercups. They're poisonous!

    		It does contain Acacia powder, though!

    		Opiates have cough suppressing properties, hence you will often find codeine in cough medicine.

    Many years ago I was prescribed methadone for a particularly irritating cough, can't see that happening now!
