Is it to do with the first surah of the Quran?
I think the first verse about God being merciful is represented by the number 786.

I think peasy is right. It is something to do with numerology - allocating numerical values to individual Arabic letters and then totalling the value of auspcious words and phrases. This has a stronger tradition in Judaism I think (Gematria).
Some say that 786 is the numerical value of the very first verse of the Quran.

Nothing is special with that number. However, some muslim in Pakistan use that number as a representative of 'Bismillah'. he Arabic letters of the opening phrase of the Qur'an sum to the numerical value 786 in the system of Abjad numerals.

Check this site out, and then reconsider your opinions. A noble person, who answers your imaginations, before they mislead people:

I hope my research was useful.
NOTE: If you take the numeric values of all the letters of the Basmalah, according to the Abjad order, the total will be 786. In the Indian subcontinent the Abjad numerals became quite popular. Some people, mostly in India and Pakistan, use 786 as a substitute for Bismillah. They write this number to avoid writing the name of Allah or the Qur'anic ayah on ordinary papers. This tradition is not from the time of the Prophet -peace be upon him- or his Sahabah. It developed much later, perhaps during the later 'Abbasid period. We do not know of any reputable Imams or Jurists who used this number instead of the Bismillah.
