Are all stars "suns" in other solar systems? And what about shooting stars?

    Question #52785. Asked by elizabethmc.

    tamarindgh

The Sun is just the name we humans give it! It is still a star like all others. Shooting stars are just big lumps of rock that start to burn up in our atmosphere.

But I thought stars were made up of nebulae, not just rock. So are shooting stars not really stars?

Shooting stars are not stars. They are lumps of rock burning up.

Our sun is a star. It is a special one which has planets. We don't yet know whether all stars have their own planets, but quite a few of them do.

Stars and nebulae aren't the same thing, either. A nebula is a cloud of gas and bits spread over quite a large area. Some can be seen as hazy patches of light, ohters as dark areas.

But nebulae forms stars, right? I thought the gas and rock and dust particles were pulled together by gravitational attraction and then it becomes a star.

As with most of these things, scientists are having doubts at the moment about exactly how it does happen. Yes, nebulae can coalesce to form stars, they think, but they don't all do it.
