Lawn tennis, originally called Sphairistike, was a Brummie invention in about 1866. The first tennis club was founded by Spaniard JB Perero and TH Gem at the Manor House Hotel, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire in 1872.
The sport soon became popular. By 1874, the cloth-covered tennis ball replaced the rubber one and the first lawn tennis tournament was held between 13 people on a court laid out in Nahant, Massachussetts in 1876.
In 1877, Wimbledon Croquet Club had adopted lawn tennis and held its first international championship, won by Spencer Gore. [Source: New Shell Book of Firsts].
The question remains open.
