In police jargon, what is a cat and dog?

    Question #52870. Asked by RaeRae55. (Dec 03 04 1:39 PM)

I believe that it refers to the partnership of a
male and a female on an investigating team. If memory serves......there was an American TV show
in the late '70s or early '80s with the title of
"Dog and Cat" starring Lou Antonio and a very young Kim Basinger. Don't think it lasted long.

Is this an American term? If it was a piece of slang commonly used by the British police it would probably have appeared here:

How does the American police system work, like are county police less powerful than state police, and are county borders allowed to be crossed? Then there are sheriffs, marshalls and the CIA. All a bit confusing to me.
