    What is Melba toast?

    Question #52986. Asked by 1bookworm. (Dec 08 04 1:33 PM)

Melba toat is very thin toast, as far as I remember. It's bread which is toasted normally, then sliced through its length so you have two thin slices of bread with one toasted and one untoasted side each, then you toast it again so it's crispy.

"Melba toast" and "Peach Melba" were both named for Nellie Melba (nee Helen Mitchell), Australian soprano who took her stage name from her hometown of Melbourne. Peach Melba isn't peaches on toast but with ice cream and raspberry sauce.
