What is the real reason for seat belts?

Question #53005. Asked by ShakeyMikey. (Dec 09 04 8:26 PM)

Studies have shown you are statistically safer restrained in the vehicle. Being safely "thrown clear of the accident" rarely happens. Most people who get thrown out of a vehicle in an accident, get killed.

Being thrown through a pane of glass is never a good idea. Now going at 40 miles per hour is even more stupid. Seat belts are also good for minimising muscle and spinal injury in crashes.

Seat belts are mainly to protect an individual from second collisions that occur after the intial one. A Seat belt prevents people from colliding with eath other in the car, or being propelled through glass and the dashboard.
