"God rest ye merry gentlemen," sung outside his counting-house by a carol-singer on Christmas Eve.
In my Penguin edition, the words are actually "God bless you, merry gentleman/May nothing you dismay."

The traditional carol is "God rest ye merry, gentlemen". The correct positioning of the comma has a bearing on the sense of the first lines.

They should never give a license/ to a man who drives a sleigh/ and plays with elves.

Rick's comment about the "ubiquitous" comma can be followed up in a very popular book by British authoress, Lynne Truss, called "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" (about pandas).
It's hilarious and would make a fine Christmas gift for your nit-picker friends.
