The first Progressive Party, also known as the Bull Moose Party was formed after the fight for the 1912 presidential nomination. It was between Taft and Roosevelt. Taft won, and Roosevelt being very angry formed the Progressive Party. How did it get its name? When a reporter asked Roosevelt how he felt, he replied, "I feel as strong as a bull moose!"

Was this speech with the bull moose in anyway connected with an assassination attempt?
I remember one or another stories that some fool tried to shoot him just before he was going to give a speech. Roosevelt had the notes for his speech stuffed in his pocket, and it stopped the bullet, though he got a wound. He thought it was a great publicity stunt to go on and give the speech anyway. My history lessons are getting dusty on my top shelf, so I don't know if it's the same incident.
