Because it was invented by a man called Waterman!

Because it contains a reservoir for holding the ink, thus creating a fountain on demand when you write. Which was probably an improved version of the little boy statue with the endless supply of water running through his penis, and a darn sight easier to handle.

Actually, pencil and penis share the same root, the Latin for "tail". Pen comes from the Latin "penna" for feather; quill feathers were the first pens, remember.
