How do people make exact copies of keys?

They use a small machine with a grinding wheel at one end. The original is held in a clamp, and the blank is put into another one by the grinder. As the original key is moved along and the indents are pressed against a thin upright post so the blank follows its movement and is ground to an exact copy.

Or there's the less legitimate method of taking an impression by means of some modelling clay concealed in your hand and later making a brass casting from that. Used to be used by criminal types before the high security keys and locks came in.
