    		The Romans gave each other gifts at Saturnalia, their winter festival in December. The 13th and 14th books of Martial’s epigrams are verses supposed to accompany Saturnalia gifts. When Christians began to celebrate the birth of Christ at about the same time of year, they may well have taken over the custom along with the festival.
