We all know that the monarch that ruled the longest in England was Queen Victoria, who ruled for 64 years between 1837 and 1901. Which monarch ruled for the longest in other countries, and for how long did they rule?

King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the current king of Thailand, is said to be the longest reigning live monarch: -so says this site.

Personally, I always thought that Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, of Tonga, was the longest ruling monarch. He was around for a good long while.

Japan's emperor Hirohito ruled for a long time.

The Egyptian Pharaoh Raamses II was said to have been pharaoh for something in the area of 90 years.

Kaiser Franz Joseph II, the last Austro-Hungarian Kaiser, assumed his throne in 1849 and remained in power until 1917.

I think Hirohito was ruler from 1926 to 1989 but was an Emperor not a monarch.
Incidentally, Augustus, the first Roman Emperor ruled for 40 years, longer than any subsequent Roman Emperor.
Louis XIV of France ruled from 1643 to 1715, an impressive 72 years. This may be the longest for a monarch but I'm not entirely sure.

Surely an Emperor is a monarch, just as a Prince can be (Monaco), or a Grand Duke (Luxembourg), or a Sultan (various)? Sudden thought - you can't have joint monarchs, technically, as it means 'one ruler'. So how would you describe William and Mary in that case?

Silly me, of course emperors can be monarchs. I'll just pop elsewhere to see if William and Mary are regarded by anyone as a duarchy...

There is a word Duarchy meaning rule by two people and yet going into Google and searching '"William and Mary" Duarchs' produces zilch.
That's a shame because "Which reigning queen of England was never a monarch?" is a corker of a quiz question!
