Why is the marker put on the chips on the winning number in roulette called a dolly?

Question #53312. Asked by tjoebigham. (Dec 20 04 5:28 PM)

One definition of a dolly is a small piece of wood or metal placed on the head of a pile to prevent damage to the pile. I trust this answer is like an on-line casino: virtually ineluctable.
