Where did Pink Floyd come up with the inspiration for the song "Comfortably Numb"?

Question #53352. Asked by eytank. (Dec 21 04 10:45 PM)

Some people believe Dave Gilmour did this song because when Roger Waters was performing he was so drugged ... that he needed a hit just to get him through the show.

    "Ok.
    Just a little pinprick.
There'll be no more Aaaaaahhhhh! Roger Waters
But you may feel a little sick.
    Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working. Good.
That'll keep you going for the show.
Come on it's time to go."

Others believe it has to do with childhood illness of one of the members and another idea is it is about when one of the band was ill and needed adrenaline shots to make it through the show.

Another idea is it's about mental illness. For a real argument log on to:

I don't think you will find one meaning that everybody agrees on.

In the movie "Pink Floyd's The Wall" the main character, who is a rockstar named Pink, tries to kill himself by overdose. He is discovered by his agent right before he dies so he is given a "pinprick" of some drug that revives him and then he is carried off to perform in the show.

According to Rolling Stone, the lyrics came from Roger Waters' experience when he was injected with tranquillisers for stomach cramps by a doctor prior to playing a Pink Floyd show in Philadelphia on the band's 1977 In The Flesh' tour. "That was the longest two hours of my life", Waters said. "Trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm." The experience gave him the idea which eventually became the lyrics to this song.
