    Which was the first store to introduce gift vouchers?

    		Herbert Smith introduced a gift voucher scheme in his shop at 36 Narrow Street, Peterborough, England in 1876. According to his advertisement, “he continues to give discount Tea Tickets to every purchaser of ¼ lb of tea and upwards …. A large number of useful and ornamental articles kept in stock, which are given in exchange for Tea Tickets.”

    Benjamin Talbert Babbit had launched a gift voucher scheme in New York City in 1865. The wrappers of his soap bars were overprinted with the word “coupon,” and ten coupons entitled a customer to “a beautiful lithograph picture.” But it’s not clear in my source (The New Shell Book of Firsts) whether he was a shopkeeper or a manufacturer or both.
