When was the term "Anorexia" first applied to somebody with an eating disorder? Who used it first?

Question #53365. Asked by infiniti. (Dec 22 04 9:05 AM)

    TabbyTom

The earliest quotation in the OED is dated 1598, from Joshua Sylvester: “Then the Anorexie, Then the Dog-hunger or the Bradypepsie.” The next is from “The Saints’ Everlasting Rest” by Richard Baxter (1650): “These are sick of the anorexia, and apepsy, they have neither appetite nor digestion.”

The earliest uses of “anorexia nervosa” are from W. W. Gull, in the “Transactions of the Clinical Society”, dated 1873 and 1874: “I used the term Apepsia hysterica but..Anorexia would be more correct. The want of appetite is, I believe, due to a morbid mental state... We might call the state hysterical... I prefer, however, the more general term ‘nervosa’.”
