St. Nicholas was actually a very devout Christian from Turkey who generously gave to those in need. December 6th (the date of his death) was originally when a feast day was observed to commemorate him...but eventually became more closely associated with Christmas, the presentation of gifts, and basic gestures of good will toward men. Did he wear a red suit all the time? Probably not. His appearance and "abilities" have become mythical over the years, thanks to children's books...and Coca-cola... http://www.christmas.com/pe/1978

I recall reading that St Nicholas was usually depicted in bishop's robes. It was only when he came to America and the Dutch St Nicholas or "Sinterklaas" became confused with the mediaeval figure of Father Christmas that the modern Santa Claus was born. His red and white suit was popularised by (but certainly not introduced by) Coca Cola.
