    Because porcelain originated in ancient China and the Chinese were the first to make decorated plates and cups.

    Although the Chinese began making porcelain long before the Europeans, the common name of china for fine white porcelain comes from the china clay used to make it. China clay is so called because it was first dug and used in that country.
