What were the four elements that Aristotle said comprised all matter?

    Question #53572. Asked by Buck540.

    MaggieG 5

Philosophers before Aristotle said that all matter was composed of earth, air, fire and water, but Aristotle added a fifth that he thought permeated all the others and formed the substance of heavenly bodies which he called 'aither' from which we derive our word 'ether' and 'ethereal'.
