This site gives the following definition: The name 'mile' is from Latin milliarus/miliare - a thousand, or Latin milliarum/miliarium - a milestone, implying mille passuum, 1000 paces each of 5 Roman feet (about 11.65 modern inches). The Roman mile was divided into 8 stadia of 125 paces, 625 feet.
A little less than Buck's mile but I have 1,479m -- The passus of each Roman soldier being 2.4 feet, and after 1000 of them a stone was placed to indicate the mile mark. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mile
So, you could always just round it off and say an even 1,480m!
