    		The obstetrician Ignaz Semmelweis was fired from his position in a Vienna hospital, because he challenged that the cause of high levels of infections in the hospital was due to doctors not washing their hands.

    ...but it does say he was fired in 1849, though, and I believe it was also the instruments that needed disinfecting, too.

    		He started promoting antisepsis in hospitals in 1847 but it seems Peasy is correct about him lasting two years before being sacked. His methods are said to have reduced puerperal fever in his hospital from 12% to 1%.
