In Israel, the president is a symbolic role, like the British monarch. He is elected by the K'nesset (the parliament). The PM is elected by the people and actively runs the country. The current president (and a very good one at that) is Moshe Katzav.

In India, the President is the equavalent of the British Sovereign, though of course not hereditary. He's elected for a term of 5 years by the two houses of Parliament, and is only the de jure head of state, while the Prime Minister does the work, being the leader of the party with the majority in the lower house of Parliament. However, the President does have wide powers in an emergency and in certain other cases.

I'm sure the powers of prime ministers and heads of state vary from country to country. You would need to consult the constitution of a particular country to find out what powers its President and Prime Minister have.
