An acre is 4,840 square yards, i.e. 1/640 of a square mile or about two-fifths of a hectare.
According to the current online edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica, the area of New York City is 309 square miles (i.e. 197,760 acres). Greater London has an area of about 610 square miles or 390,400 acres.
