Jamie Burnett re-wrote the record books by compiling the highest break in the history of professional snooker.

The Scot completed a clearance of 148 at the UK Championship qualifiers in Prestatyn on his way to a 9-8 win over Leo Fernandez in the second round. Fernandez committed a foul in the 14th frame, giving Burnett a free ball. Burnett potted the brown as the extra red, then another brown followed by the 15 reds, 12 blacks, two pinks and a blue and all the colours. The world number 49 from Glasgow becomes the first player to make a break of more than 147 in a professional match.

The potential maximum break is 155. This can be achieved by potting a free ball followed by a black, and then going on to pot all the reds followed by blacks, then the colours in sequence. A variation of the game of snooker was invented by the late Joe Davis in 1959 which had two additional balls, orange (8 points) and purple (10 points). Some games were televised but it never really caught on, though it is still played in some pubs and clubs. The theoretical maximum with this variation, known as 'Snooker Plus', is 210 for a normal maximum break, and 221 for a maximum break with a free ball followed by a purple.
