Not the answer I know, but Charles Van Doren, son of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mark Van Doren, appeared as a contestant on Twenty-One in late 1956, I believe he was the cause of a little bit of a ruckus in 1957.

There is a famous 1957 NBC quiz show winner who was famous before winning and whose name is more widely known than van Doren.

I'm going for Errol Flynn. In fact, according to this page, on February 5th 1957, Errol Flynn won $30,000 dollars on a quiz show called "The Big Surprise".
