By coincidence I just took thejazzkickazz's smelly quiz and he said Limburger, but I suspect it's also a personal opinion in the top few choices.

"Limburger cheese" seems to have its origins in the Belgian province of Limburg, not in the German town of Limburg an der Lahn. It is very similar to "Herve Cheese", which is from the neighbouring French-speaking province of Liège. But there are so many more cheeses that score well on the Scale of Stinkiness, that I doubt if any jury could ever decide in this matter. Burgundy has Epoisses; the North of France has Maroilles; apart from Vieux- Boulogne there is also Vieux-Lille. All very similar cheeses and very stinky indeed.

I just bought a cheese called St. Aubrey. I think that was it because it is now in the garbage dumper outside. It was with the Bries in The Green Market in Williamsburg VA. It had a brownish rind with a bulging soft, yellowish center. It stunk up my grocery bag and when I sniffed at the package I thought I smelled ammonia. I opened it, gasped at the stench, tasted a little bit, and spit it out. I had to wash out my mouth. Totally disgusting. I googled for it but couldn't find anything under that name. That has to be the worst thing ever, as bad as 'dead.'
