The word for the beast is spelled in various ways. Chambers gives zho, zo, dso, dzo and dzho. The female can also be called a zhomo, somo or jomo, and the male can be a zobo, zobu or dsobo. The Tibetan etymon is said to be “mdzo.”
It’s well known to Scrabble players.

Dzo's are also used as beasts of burden as they are considerd less aggressive than yaks, though at very high elevations yaks are more common as they can better stand the extreme cold. I've trekked in Nepal on a number of occasions, and heard the word for these animals usually pronounced 'joe'. Dzo appears to be the accepted English spelling.
