Al Smith, governor of NY State in 1932, was the victim of a particularly nasty political campaign for President. Ostensibly, public opinion was turned against him largely because of his Catholic faith (he was the first Catholic to run for president) and his liberal ideas, ideas that didn't interest too many people during the Depression, and was defeated by Herbert Hoover.
