United States currency occasionally uses an asterisk instead of letters or numbers as the last digit of the serial numbers on all bills. Anyone else know why?

    Question #54308. Asked by dejavucub4.

    McGruff

    Question:
    What are Replacement Notes?

    Answer:
They are notes issued to replace damaged notes. They usually have a star, asterisk or special prefix in the serial number to indicate that they are replacements. Due to their scarcity, they can command a significant premium over the regular issued note.
