Why is it that some dogs like to mount peoples' legs, while other dogs find no interest in doing this?

For dogs, this can be not only a sexual issue but a dominance one and most dog experts feel that any dog who does this should be discouraged. Neutering prevents an estimated 70% of dogs who mount legs from doing it in the future, but the trait can be common among female dogs who have been neutered.

Strangely some dogs have a preference for arms rather than legs.

My Irish Terrier Reilly mounts pillows, and the late Rufus (Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier - not a hooman!) used to have a go at my legs, not a pretty sight - but the funniest sight I've seen was Gemma, my daughter's Australian Cattle Dog, having a go at Reilly. Both male dogs were castrated, but the vet tells me that testosterone is secreted from other glands than those things (I've forgotten what they are called.) I once owned a very mixed up American Cocker Spaniel who was a complete hermaphrodite. Won't go into details, but her/his reproductive organs ended up in Qld University.

Most dogs I have known either repeatedly kick out one of their back legs or repeatedly poke out their tongue when a certain part of their rump is scratched. Are there names for these canine reflexes, are they common to all dogs and why do they do this?

Given that humans have selectively bred horses, cats and dogs over thousands of years, why is it that dogs show much more diversity in shape and size than the other two? In other words, the smallest and largest horse or cat are still "horse or cat shaped" but dogs seem to differ remarkably more in size and shape.

Why do dogs wiggle their rear legs when scratched on their belly or chest?
