I'll add that the Archies also had a number one with 'Sugar Sugar', and as far as I know, they never even appeared in person. Unlike the Monkees they were not actually a fictional band prior to their one appearance, though apparently claimed to have existed before as part of their marketing.

The Archies was what I was looking for...although it appears the Monkees did it with "I'm a Believer", so I stand corrected. I just couldn't count it, since that was a Neil Diamond song :)

What about The Heights, the fictional band that was the subject of a short lived TV series on Fox? Their song "How Do You Talk to an Angel?" hit #1 on the Billboard charts for two weeks in 1992.
