He was nursing his friend, the French ambassador, who had pneumonia back to health and contracted a worse bout himself. At the time, he was giving early morning lessons (as in 5am) to Queen Christina in Sweden. With Descartes being unaccustomed to the Swedish weather and the early mornings (he was used to lying in until noon) the pneumonia killed him.
