Hungary is the country reckoned to have suffered the highest ever inflation, the major part of this occuring in 1946. In the latter part of 1945 the currency unit was the pengo and a series of six notes were in use ranging from 1 to 1,000 pengo. By March 1946 a new issue of notes had been issued with face values in millions of pengo. Three months later inflation had again increased a millionfold and notes were produced with face values up to 1 milliard bilpengo, that's 1 with 21 noughts after it! You can see a few of these notes and a brief history at http://tomchao.com/hb12.html
Some years ago I got interested in this subject and managed to collect full sets of all the Hungarian hyper inflation notes issued during 1945 - 46. It's quite frightening to look at them and makes you realise just how evil a force inflation really is! Peoples' whole life savings are simply wiped out and money becomes worthless.
