There is no automatic machinery to replace a Pope incapable of performing his duties. John XXIII was deposed by the council of Constance in 1215, but not before being declared an anti-pope. There was and still is much controversy about whether or not even a full church council can depose a duly elected pontiff. Only one pope has ever abdicated, Celestine V in 1295. He died in prison and there is much speculation he was murdered. Gregory XII also abdicated, but he'd already been declared an anti-pope. At the moment, according to the bookmakers, Dionigi Cardinal Tetamonzi, Archbishop of Milan, is the front runner to be elected as the next pope, at 5-2.
