The things Hollywood does to books are unspeakable. In the books, Jane's father is a professor; in the movies, an ivory trader.
Burroughs was so upset with the way the (Wiessmuller) movies portrayed Tarzan that he set up his own production company to film his versions. As much as I enjoy Wiessmuller's Tarzan, I do not consider him the real Tarzan.

I believe there's the usual Hollywood tinkering going on with this one. In the original book versions, Jane is Jane Porter, of Baltimore. In the movie versions, she's Jane Parker, of Mayfair in London. At least that's my understanding.
