What is the purpose of an eliptical crankwheel on a bicycle, and how does it do this?

It smoothes out the power strokes. I know, because I've got one on my mountain bike. There's usually a weak spot in the push as one pedal reaches the bottom and the other hasn't quite got power at the top. The eliptical crankwheel gives the effect of a different gearing at this point to give a more even force to the drive chain. Does work - when I did a 15 mile ride round the Forest of Dean last autumn on a borrowed bike with a circular crankwheel I could tell the difference.
