Presuming you mean the work by Pierre LaMure, it is based on fact. But, like most biographical novels it embroiders, edits, contracts, and creates for dramatic effect. It isn't as far-fetched as 'The Agony and the Ecstasy’, but you must not take it as a factual biography of Toulouse-Lautrec. For comparison I suggest ‘Toulouse-Lautrec, a Life’ by Julia Frey (bit of a tough read, but the best bio) and ‘Toulouse-Lautrec, the Soul of Montmartre’ by Reinhold Heller (shorter, with better pictures). A good history of the club is ‘The Moulin Rouge’ by Jacques Plessis et al.

One of the things I really love about 'Moulin Rouge!' is the period it's set in - Paris at the turn of the century. This quiz should test if you've taken the time to check up on the real background to the movie!
