The pound sign £ is only historically connected to the lb used for weight. Originally, one pound sterling (£1) was one pound of silver, probably in the form of 240 silver pennies. The £ is for libra, Latin for pound. The weight abbreviation lb is also for libra.
Why Americans call # a pound sign is beyond me.
