Just happened to look at page 256 of "The Book of Lists" - and Eureka!
David O'Keefe (d. 1901) King of Yap
"In 1871, O'Keefe, an Irish immigrant who had settled in Savannah, Georgia, said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for China. En route he was shipwrecked on Yap ... west of Guam. Adjusting well to island life, he acquired land from local chiefs and, in a few short years became king. He even designed a royal emblem, an American flag waving over the initials 'O'K'.
"Not forgetting Mrs. O'Keefe, he sent money home to Savannah twice a year. His tranquil reign was upset one day when the tribal chiefs presented him with a suitable queen. Ever mindful of Mrs. O'Keefe, he tried to sidestep this bigamous marriage. But the chiefs were insistent. Reluctantly, King David accepted Queen Dollyboy - reluctantly at first, that is, since the royal couple eventually produced seven children. In 1901, O'Keefe sent word to wife number one that he was coming home. With two of his Yapese sons, he boarded the ship 'Santa Cruz'. It was lost at sea."
