It was actually Rudolf Diels. Hermann Goering was Minister of Prussia in 1933, and appointed Diels Head of the political police dept 1A, which was soon re-named the Gestapo. Goering was Diels' boss, but did not hold the title of Gestapo Head any more than Hitler did. Diels, by Nazi standards was moderate, and was not convicted of war crimes. He survived the war, and was active in post-war German politics. He died in 1957. More interesting info on Rudolf Diels is at

"The Luck In The Head" is my favorite book, and probably one of the least known books out there. Written by M. John Harrison and Ian Miller, it is very interesting and graphic. Here's a quiz for those of you who have read the book.
