It is the number you call for emergencies if you aren't near a landline phone. Strangely enough, you can use a mobile phone that is out of range and get perfectly clear reception, but only with this number. Apr 17 06, 8:11 AM

That only applies if some network is in range. Same in the UK with 112. If you are with Vodafone and out of range, but T-mobile is in range, dialing 999 won't get through but 112 will. Equally, if your phone is out of credit, 112 will still work. Apr 17 06, 10:51 AM
