    What makes our hair grow?

    Question #54998. Asked by joezhou300. (Feb 09 05 8:47 PM)

Basic nutrition for starters. A balanced diet will always result in healthy hair growth.

There are 3 growth cycles that hair goes through. The Anagen stage which is also called the 'growing' stage, and can last between 2-7 years. The Catagen or transitional stage where it just stops growing, usually lasting one week, this is where it falls out. And the Telegen stage, or resting stage, whereby it lasts for about 3 months before new growth appears and the cycle starts over.

Mainly though, the cirulatory system in your body is mostly responsible for your hair growth. The papillary layer of the dermis is where all the action with the blood vessels take place, then it moves to the germinal matrix (cells of the hair bulb) the cells are then pushed up the follicle to form the hair and the inner root sheath.

Hair is made at the base of a hair follicle. There are a thousand hair follicles on your head. Not all of them are working at the same time. Only about 80% of your follicles are producing hair at any one time. The rest of the follicles are asleep or dormant. When dormant hair follicles start working again, they push out an old hair while making a new one. You could lose 50 to 100 hairs in any day. Some of us lose more than that–and don’t get them back again!
