    Where is Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate, and why is it called this?

    		It's the shortest street in York. The name was originally 'Whitnourwhatnourgate' but when criminals were flogged there, the name 'Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate' evolved.

    		Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate is the shortest street in York. The saxon words mean “neither one thing nor the other”. In the 16th century, the name was 'Whitnourwhatnourgate,' but the present form emerged when the area became the site of the city where petty criminals were publicly flogged. It can be found at the end of Colliergate.
