The Watch and Ward Society assumed the role of determining what Bostonians should read and what was obscene. The slogan 'Banned in Boston' was probably a direct result of their assiduous efforts, as they were able to cow the good bookselling citizens of their town into not only not selling certain material, but had enough clout to have the authors of 'obscene material' arrested. The society's name was later changed to The New England Citzens Crime Commission.
Small blip here about them.

The Legion of Decency, another censorship organization operating under the thinly disguised auspices of the Catholic church, assumed a very firm stance on obscenity in films.
